On a Wing and a Prayer
I don't think anything matches paragliding for an authentic thrill factor--to feel like you've gained the power of flight, to soar off a cliff or a mountaintop soundlessly with no motor power into a vast blue sky-- there's just nothing like it. The learning process, however, is significantly less sublime; full of failed takeoffs and tangled lines, it can be the ultimate exercise in frustration. And depending on what you're trying to master, it can be terrifying.

San Francisco is a city of countless delights
San Francisco is a city of countless delights, but for me, the number one draw has always been the windsurfing. I learned in the mild conditions across the bay in Alameda, but as I got better and better, I was at last able to manage what for me (and many) is the holy grail of windsurfing in the bay area—Crissy Field. Just inside the Golden Gate, Crissy Field has it all-- ripping spring winds, fabulous chop for jumping when the tide ebbs, and breathtaking scenery. The skilled and the brave can even sail under the iconic Golden Gate Bridge—the foolhardy can too.

Storming Thunder River
No place in the lower 48 answers my cry for adrenaline-pumping possibilities like the Grand Canyon. Whether you enter from the raging whitewater of the Colorado River, or the sheer walls of the north or south rim, you’ll find every manner of playground-- slot canyons, waterfalls, limestone caverns, and rock faces that make even the most intrepid climbers and canyoneers take pause. Case in point: Thunder River.
